Infrastructure and Operations Fees

Endowed Funds

What is the Infrastructure and Operations Assessment?
To help ensure a sustainable financial model for the future, a portion of all non-scholarship gift and endowment income is directed to the Infrastructure and Operations (I&O) Fund. This fund helps support the university’s costs of providing the operating facilities and administrative services associated with gift-funded activities.

How did I&O fees change?
The amount of the assessment did not change, but the timing was changed to accelerate the positive impact of endowment gifts.

Beginning July 1, 2023, the 4% assessment on new gifts to endowments occurs when the gift is made rather than on the first payout from the endowment, which was the practice previously. Rather than reducing the amount of payout in the first and second years, this allows the payout to immediately support our mission.

The assessment on new gifts is now noted in the “Other Changes” field on Financial Endowment Reports. The 6% I&O assessment on the payout will continue to be made when the payout is calculated after the close of the fiscal year. The total percentage of the assessment remains the same.

The example below illustrates the difference for a new endowment of $100,000.

Before July 1, 2023

Gift received$100,000
Total payout$4,350
I&O 4% of gift
I&O 6% of payout

Total I&O$4,261
